Once again we were very lucky with the weather. Bright sunshine was the order of the day. However there was a stiff breeze blowing and conditions underfoot were soggy due to the heavy rain showers on previous days. The Rockmount team were really geared up for this one as they knew that 5 pts would be enough to bring home the trophy. Early indications were that matches were fairly close and that these points were going to be difficult to attain. The team shook themselves, stepped on the gas and cruised to a memorable victory. They ended up winning all five matches ensuring a comfortable 6pt winning margin over runnersup Mahee Island. All in all a memorable year in which the team has perfomed miracles. My thanks and congratulations go out to everyone involved!

Strong winds blew throughout the day and made playing good golf extremely difficult. A few squally rain showers early in the match made things worse. On the whole, though, considering the weather we have been having recently it turned out to be a reasonable day,but it was the wind that was the overriding difficulty. The match itself was played in a good sporting fashion with much friendly banter, typical of matches played against previous Ormeau teams in the past. The Rockmount team acquitted themselves excellently and the club should be proud that it has such a fine team representing it in this competition. The craic was good during and after the post match meal. The jokes were coming thick and fast when the captain had to bring proceedings to a close otherwise we might have there all afternoon. All in all a good days work and with only one more leg to play, away to Ormeau, puts us in good shape to win the competition.

It was unbelieveable that we experienced a fine dry day for the match after some very indifferent weather. The team excelled against a very fine Mahee side and with one match to go against Ormeau Golf Club, have put themselves in a strong position to lift the title. However with 20 points still to play for its still in the lap of the gods.Andrew Neagle continues to prove that he is such an excellent acquisition and the mighty ‘atoms’ Freddie and Andy bringing up the rear are proving a difficult nut to crack for the visiting teams.Anyway one match to go and we are in the drivers seat but never know with the game golf, it’s a terribly funny game!

Players arrived at 9.30 to find conditions very unpleasant indeed. Rain and low mist (not the weather usually found in this idyllic part of the world) were the order of the day. The captains met and agreed to postpone the start of the match for ½ an hour. The match duly got underway in very slowly improving conditions. The match itself was a very close run affair that could have gone either way. For instance, the captains pairing were beaten on the last hole by a birdie from the Mahee pair. The match saw the debut of Andrew Neagle who duly obliged with a win playing with Winston Graham. Andrew is a very welcome addition to the squad and we look forward to many similar results in the future. All in all a very encouraging result against a very strong Mahee team and we look forward to, with some optimism, the return leg at home on 30th !

A very strange day weather-wise. We were promised a fine dry day but it turned out to be overcast, breezy with light showers of rain when the match got underway. However the weather improved as the day progressed. When the teams met at Rockmount we won 3-2. I felt that we should have won at least one of the matches, that day that we lost. I reversed these two pairings in the hope of gaining a more satisfactory result. This produced a positive result in the two matches concerned, both pairs winning. However the three pairs who won at Rockmount all lost in this away match! That’s golf I suppose. Anyway it resulted in a halved match overall which isn’t too bad.

This match was to be played on Tues.5th July. However due to severely inclement weather the two captains met and decided to postpone the match until the following week. This proved to be a very wise decision as the match itself was played in glorious sunshine. This time Colin McNeill was included in the team following his sensational performance in the 6T Club away day at the Seniors Open competition at Mahee Island (48 pts). However the 3 stroke cut in his handicap proved a “ bridge too far”. The rest of the team performed adequately and secured a 3-2 home win. The captain now has to sit down and draw up a team that is capable of providing a stiff challenge to Mahee Island who are this seasons favourites.

Despite the weather forecast the day turned out quite nice for golf. A light breeze was blowing and there were some odd drizzly showers but these were interspersed with pleasant spells of sunshine. The course was in perfect condition, even accounting for all the recent heavy rain. The Rockmount team quickly knuckled down to the task ahead, took full advantage of the conditions and produced a fantastic result. Excellent !

Tuesday morning dawned bright and sunny despite some horrendous weather in past days. All players teed off in bright sunshine although it was a tad breezy. Soon after the start though the dark clouds started gathering and resulted in a couple of heavy showers when the wind increased alarmingly. Was it going to be a repeat of the previous year when the match had to be abandoned, after 9 holes, due to the inclement weather? Conditions eventually settled down and the match was completed in fine sunshine.
The match itself was a close run affair. After nine holes word on the course was that Rockmount was well down in all five matches. However a strange spectator figure appeared on the ninth green. It was our own captain Stevie Clarke! He had just called to offer his support. The result was that Rockmount roared back into contention and halved the match.

The match was played in blustery conditions of sunshine and showers. This made good scoring extremely difficult, and meant local knowledge was vital. However the team performed admirably given the circumstances.
The highlight of the match was a hole-in-one at the 16th by the Mount Ober player Eddie Cairns who failed to turn up for the post-match meal! (Their captain reported he was ill)
The reciprocal leg of the match is scheduled to take place at Rockmount on Tuesday 24th May (tee-off 10:00am).

Following a weekend of horrendous weather, players were looking forward to the mainly dry day that had been forecast. However the earlier part of the match was played in squally showers (some of hailstones). The main feature of the day was the unrelenting wind, which made playing good golf extremely difficult. The team persevered and got the extremely satisfying result that I knew they were capable of.
Next match away to Carnalea Thursday 9th June.
