Rockmount Golf Club rounded off a successful 2017 season by winning the Cowdy Golf Association Club of the Year for 2017 at the associations AGM on Wednesday 7 March at Co. Armagh Golf Club. The stunning trophy has been given pride of place in the members bar and the pennant added to the “Cowdy corner” should members which to view them.

The Cowdy golf association has a long history dating back to 1920.  Its membership consists of approximately 30 clubs from all over Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland. The award for club of the year was established in 2004 when Mr Bill Beasley (former honorary secretary & president) donated the magnificent trophy to be played for annually by the association’s members.  The impressive trophy is awarded to the club that amasses the most points through their success in the eight Cowdy Association competitions.  Points are awarded for reaching the quarter final, semi-final and finals with maximum points being awarded for the winners. 2017 was the first year that Rockmount Golf Club have ever won club of the year.  Rockmount’s success was a direct result of the fine achievements of their various teams throughout the 2017 season which seen them winning both the Junior Cowdy (18pts) and Cowdy Seniors (10pts) competitions.  They reached the final of the Rossmore Cup competition (15pts) and the quarter final of the Ronan Rafferty Trophy (9pts).  All this meant Rockmount amassed a winning point’s total of 52, 10 ahead of Mourne (42pts) and 13 ahead of Co. Armagh (39pts) who finished in second and third respectively.

Commenting on Rockmount's success 2017 club captain John Hinds said “I am really proud to be receiving this magnificent trophy on behalf of Rockmount Golf Club.  Our success last year could be attributed to the fantastic hard work, planning and preparation of our team captains and the great competitive spirit of our players. Winning this trophy is just reward for our club and highlights the progress we have made in recent years with our gents section in inter club golf competitions. I firmly believe that this will be a foundation for more success for our club under 2018 Captain Frank Mc Williams and in the years to come.”

Mr Frank McWilliams, the 2018 club captain, went on to say “The Cowdy Association has a long and proud history and we at Rockmount Golf Club are delighted to participate across the wide range of inter club fixtures on offer.  I was exceptionally proud as the 2018 Rockmount club Captain to attend the Cowdy AGM at Armagh Golf Club. To be awarded the team of the year is a notable milestone in the relatively short history of our great club. Following the release of the 2018 draws, Rockmount golf club once again looks forward to competing and challenging for the trophies in the coming season.”

Rockmount captain Mr Frank McWilliams would like to remind all our members that the team sheets are now up in the gent’s locker room and he would encourage as many members as possible to put their names forward and make 2018 another successful year for Rockmount.
