Holt Shield Update

Rockmount qualified for the knockout stages of the Holt Shield after coming through an extremely competitive section which up until the last day had all four teams still in contention. A birdie by Jimmy Robinson on the 18th at Helen’s Bay was required to ensure passage to the last 16.

The draw was seeded depending on points achieved in group stages and unfortunately this meant we were drawn to face the number one seeds Fortwilliam.  It is safe to say this was the draw no club wanted as Fortwilliam have been in six of the last seven finals.

The team at Fortwilliam consisted of: - Andy Gregge, Pete Coffey, Paul Kelly, Frankie Ward and Jimmy Robinson. Team captain in my absence was Andrew Campbell and he encouraged the team to a fantastic halved match. The winners on the day were Andrew Gregge and Frankie Ward with Pete Coffey getting a valuable half match. This gave the team a great incentive for the home leg.

The home leg was on 15th July and the team consisted of Andrew Gregge, Jimmy Robinson, Frankie Ward, Pete Coffey and Thomas Gibson who was making his first appearance of the season.

On my first phone call to Rockmount from Orlando Diane Patterson informed me that I was “like an expectant father” waiting on results. At that stage through nine we were up in all the matches - Tommy Gibson was in fact 7 up and it was only a matter of time before he won to give us our first point.  Victories quickly followed for Andrew Gregge and Frankie Ward. Pete Coffey agreed a half and Jimmy Robinson was called in whilst two up.

This victory has set up a quarter final clash with Carnalea – who were victorious over Scrabo. The first leg is at home on Sunday 1st August at 3.30pm. Support would be very much appreciated.
