Irish Mixed Foursomes Team Qualify

An early start saw Rockmount tee off with the host club Shandon Park on a beautiful clear sunny Sunday.  The course was in great condition considering the extreme flooding on the previous Thursday & Friday, a credit to the Shandon Green Staff, managed by none other than our own Jeff Lamb

The team players were steadying up after the first few holes but found the slow greens, that looked fast to be a wee bit of a handful over the first few holes, leaving putts short on many occasions.

By the ninth most of the players had steadied up and were shooting pars or bogeys.  The tricky wee par 3 10th saw all our teams leaving the green with a Par 3.

Then at the 13th hole the crowds erupted with loud applause as Garry Gilmore got a “Hole in One” at the par 3, 173 yard, hitting a 5 iron onto about 12 yards and the ball ran up to the hole and dropped in.  A fantastic achievement under an already pressure situation.  At the 19th in great tradition he set up a drink for the Rockmount Team and supporters as well as his playing partners.  Well done Garry.

Garry and Jan were on song, after the Hole in one they were 4 over gross, but a wee hiccup at 16 & 17 dropping 5 shots but finishing great with a par 4 at the 18th.  Despite the 16 & 17 they finished with a brilliant net 70½, par for the course been 70.

On the back nine most of the team were in full swing by now and hitting good steady golf.  Some wayward shots were met by good recovery.  Like the 13th green where Jimmy’s tee shot found green side bunker and Sue played a brilliant bunker shot to leave Jimmy with an easy foot putt for par.

The team spirit was building with anticipation at the 18th as each pair arrived and finished.  A buzz of what was their total net kept us all in suspense.  With the last pair to finish saw Mark hit a great second shot into about 12 feet in two leaving his mum Ann a putt for birdie, but another lip out and par finish gave them a very credible net 72½, and the Team a total of 295 for the best 4 Cards.

Then the long wait to find out if we qualified.  After many hours the good news came through, we had qualified in 2nd place, Belvior Park were 1st with total 291, Lisburn 296 and Ormeau 299½ who beat host club Shandon on count back.  Well done Rockmount Irish Mixed team, two years in a row at qualifying, we must be doing something right.

The Captains would like to thank all the Players for a great fantastic effort.  Also to all the squad who didn’t play but took part in the practice rounds and to those who supported us on the day.  Thank you to Gents Captain Peter O’Hara and Lady Captain Lorraine Toolan for their great support.  Thanks to Helen Hall, Moyra & Fraser Evans for their support. Big big thanks and well done to all.  Dougie & Heather.
