The first leg of Junior cup took place at RCD on a lovely sunny afternoon. Jan finished her match very quickly winning 6 up followed by Ciara who won 3 up. Jo, Maureen and Pauline battled bravely on to the 18th with Jo winning 2 up, Maureen all square and Pauline unfortunately lost on the 18th by one hole.

This resulted in 3 1/2 matches and 10 holes up for the return at Rockmount.

The team arrived at Rockmount focused and determined, there was no room for complacency. Jo finished first winning 6/4 followed by Ciara on the 18th winning 2/1. With 2 matches won we headed out to tell the others but at this stage Maureen and Pauline had won their matches 3/2 and 4/3 respectively and Leonie was 1 up at this stage.

Well done to the Rockmount girls and thanks to the ladies of RCD for their hospitality and competitive friendly matches.

On Sunday 22nd July the Rockmount Junior Cup team met Shandon Park in the quarter finals at Balmoral Golf Club. Even before a ball was struck it was obvious how great the task was – In each of the matches the Shandon players were around two shots lower in handicap!
All the matches were extremely close the whole way round and the first in was Andrea Watson with a 3 and 2 win for Rockmount. The next two matches went Shandon’s way as Maureen Entwistle and Jan Lindsay were narrowly defeated. Leonie Power then levelled things up with another great 3 and 2 win.
In the final match Ciara Agnew was two down with two to play – things were not looking good! Ciara however played wonderful golf and pared the 17th and 18th to win both holes and take the match down the 19th. On this final hole Ciara had yet another par and won the match! Cue scenes of jubilation from the Rockmount players and supporters.  In the Semi-final we face another stern test in Clandeboye.
Many thanks to all who came out to support us – it was very much appreciated.

On Tuesday 26th June the junior cup team faced RCD at Rockmount. The team were all 'up for the match' but no one quite predicted what was to follow against such illustrious opponents.
There were early wins for Jan, Maureen and Barbara and then Ciara brought her match home -winning one up on the last. This left Andrea - who after 18 holes was all square. On the first tie hole Andrea had a wonderful birdie to win the hole and the match to give us a 5-0 lead with 18 holes up!

One might expect an air of over confidence from a team who won 5 matches at home and were 18 holes up, however the Junior Cup team headed to Royal County Down never underestimating the challenges of the Championship Links with the additional hazard of inclement weather.
The first four matches were reasonably tight going through the 9th with the final match well up. Jan continued to win further holes after the turn finally defeating her opponent on the 12th, 7 holes up. With that one game in the bag the rest of the matches were called in.
This is yet another great success for the Rockmount Ladies and takes them to the quarter finals stage of the competition. They now take on Shandon Park GC on Sunday 22nd July @ 2.30pm at Balmoral Golf Club, being the neutral venue host for the quarters.
As stand in Team Captain I would like to thank our players for yet another outstanding performance and also to the supporters who always give our players great encouragement. My thanks also to Norman Entwistle who ball spotted on the day. Norman thereafter made history being the first man to enjoy a sherry in the exclusive (ly) ladies Club House!

On 20th May the Rockmount Junior Cup team of Andrea Watson, Ciara Agnew, Maureen Entwistle, Jo Donaldson and Jan Lindsay played Belvoir in the first round of the Junior Cup. All the matches were keenly fought and at the end of play we had secured two wins courtesy of Jan and Ciara. Maureen was extremely unlucky in her match as after 18 holes it was all square and unfortunately she lost on the first tie hole.

The return match was on Sunday 3rd June with the same team except for Leonie Power coming in for the unavailable Jo.
Belvoir arrived at Rockmount clearly very confident! However they didn’t bargain on the Rockmount spirit and determination!
Andrea led brilliantly from the front and turned around an early deficit to win one up on the 18th. This was a marvellous victory against a very strong Belvoir player. Ciara then followed up with another one up win and Leonie won on the 16th.
Jan unfortunately came up against a player who seemed to birdie and par every hole. This meant it all came down to Maureen’s match and after 18 holes it was all square! Yet again she had to go up the tie holes! It took two holes to separate them with Maureen holding her nerve to bring Rockmount home to victory – cue the celebrations. This was a great result against a strong Belvoir team and all the girls deserve immense credit for the wonderful standard of play they produced.

In ideal weather conditions of sunshine and not a puff of wind the Rockmount ladies played in the second round of the Junior Cup against opponents Belvoir.
As the no shots rule applies the Rockmount ladies were all matched with opponents who had significantly lower handicaps. Andrea Patterson 11 played against an 8; Maureen Entwhisle 15 played against a 9; Diane Patterson 15 played against a 10; Barbara Fleet 15 played against a 13 and Leonie Power 16 played against a 13.
The handicap difference clearly did not perturb the Rockmount team with all our ladies at one stage or another taking the lead in their matches. Both Maureen and Leonie defeated their lower handicap opponents 4 :2 and 4:3, which was exceptional. (Leonie’s opponent called her a “birdie machine”!) Barbara and Diane kept their leads or remained all square for the best part of their rounds. It was only at the 16th that Barbara went one hole down for the first time with Belvoir winning that match on the 17th. With 2 matches won and 2 lost pressure transferred to Diane who was still in play and heading up the 18th, one up. Belvoir won that hole so it was back to all square and around to the first tee box to start over. You could feel the tension in the air, each side desperately wanting to win. Tie holes are like penalties in World Cup – one of the two teams has to win but it’s not always the best one. Well that’s what this felt like when Belvoir won the hole giving them the overall win.
The standard of play of the Rockmount ladies was outstanding and each player exuded confidence throughout. They truly deserved to win on the day. Well done to all who played for the Junior Cup or were reserves. Also, my thanks to those who took the time to come and support our players.

On 2nd June the Rockmount Ladies took to the fairways of Shandon Park in the first round of the Junior Cup taking on opponents Spa. It was probably the hottest day of the year so far and not only was the weather hot but the performance of the Rockmount Ladies was blazing defeating Spa 4:1. This was an exceptionally good score as shots are no longer given in this tournament and 4 of our ladies played lower handicap opponents.
My thanks to Lady Captain and her husband Frazer for giving their support to the team, it was much appreciated.
Well done to the team and we look forward to our next challenge against Belvoir at Knock GC on Sunday 3rd July 2011 at 4.30pm.
