In ideal weather conditions of sunshine and not a puff of wind the Rockmount ladies played in the second round of the Junior Cup against opponents Belvoir.
As the no shots rule applies the Rockmount ladies were all matched with opponents who had significantly lower handicaps. Andrea Patterson 11 played against an 8; Maureen Entwhisle 15 played against a 9; Diane Patterson 15 played against a 10; Barbara Fleet 15 played against a 13 and Leonie Power 16 played against a 13.
The handicap difference clearly did not perturb the Rockmount team with all our ladies at one stage or another taking the lead in their matches. Both Maureen and Leonie defeated their lower handicap opponents 4 :2 and 4:3, which was exceptional. (Leonie’s opponent called her a “birdie machine”!) Barbara and Diane kept their leads or remained all square for the best part of their rounds. It was only at the 16th that Barbara went one hole down for the first time with Belvoir winning that match on the 17th. With 2 matches won and 2 lost pressure transferred to Diane who was still in play and heading up the 18th, one up. Belvoir won that hole so it was back to all square and around to the first tee box to start over. You could feel the tension in the air, each side desperately wanting to win. Tie holes are like penalties in World Cup – one of the two teams has to win but it’s not always the best one. Well that’s what this felt like when Belvoir won the hole giving them the overall win.
The standard of play of the Rockmount ladies was outstanding and each player exuded confidence throughout. They truly deserved to win on the day. Well done to all who played for the Junior Cup or were reserves. Also, my thanks to those who took the time to come and support our players.

On 2nd June the Rockmount Ladies took to the fairways of Shandon Park in the first round of the Junior Cup taking on opponents Spa. It was probably the hottest day of the year so far and not only was the weather hot but the performance of the Rockmount Ladies was blazing defeating Spa 4:1. This was an exceptionally good score as shots are no longer given in this tournament and 4 of our ladies played lower handicap opponents.
My thanks to Lady Captain and her husband Frazer for giving their support to the team, it was much appreciated.
Well done to the team and we look forward to our next challenge against Belvoir at Knock GC on Sunday 3rd July 2011 at 4.30pm.
