Jack Craig Memorial Cup
The day started weather wise, fine and sunny but this was not to last. Some sunny spells here and there was the order of the day and this along with a well presented but tight difficult course was to reflect in the scores from all the teams.
First out was Robert & Diane who lead the charge and after 9 holes with a good steady 16pts a great back 9, 18pts gave them a total of 34pts. The back nine may have been better but for two uncharacteristic missed small putts from Robert on 16 & 17. A good steady opening score for the Team.
Mother & Son, Anne & Mark Wynne were out next and had a steady 1st 9 with 18pts. But as for all our team the weather was closing in from fine & sunny to cold, windy and wet. The back nine proved difficult and points were dropped. But a great bunker shot from Anne on the 18th left it for son Mark to slot home the par putt to give them 33pts.
Next out were Gordon & Christine. Again a steady front nine of 18pts was recorded, so looking good at this point. The dreaded back 9 and hills began to take there toll and the wheels came off slightly over the closing holes. A good putt on the 18th from Gordon secured a point and they recorded a score of 32pts.
Jimmy & Leonie had a great from nine with 19pts including a ding. Then the back 9 took its toll and a few provisional balls on three holes saw them finish with 31pts. The difficult back 9 at Rossmore took its toll once again.
Garry & Jan were out last and after nine were to handicap, 18pts. But in the deteriorating weather conditions they battled hard over the last 9 to record a fantastic 37pts. With this score the Teams spirits got a boost, giving us a total of 136pts for the best 4 cards.
Still not sure if this was good enough, it wasn’t until we got into record the scores that the penny dropped as with 6 teams still to complete we were 11 pts in front of the next placed team. A nervous night was a head of us as we watched Team after Team complete their rounds and enter their scores and we were still were in the lead. The last Team in was the Home Club, Rossmore. When their total of 130 was entered a big shout of joy and realisation resounded from our Team as we were now the winners of the Jack Craig Memorial Cup.
A brilliant result and its more than a decade since we have one this trophy. When you look down and note the Teams competing this year, it brings home what a great fanastic win and superb performance from our Mixed Team
The Mixed Team has had a good run this year and all the players should be proud of themselves for bringing home the Jack Craig Memorial Cup. The future looks bright the future is “Rockmount”
A big thanks to our Lady Captain who braved the weather along with Heather & myself and cheered the Team keeping their spirits high.
Thanks to all the support we have had this year from the Captains, Vice Captains and club members who have followed our campaigns. This year has been one of great Team spirit, great partnerships and I would like to thank every player who not only played in the various matches but to those who turned out for the practice rounds.
Thanks go to my partner in crime, Heather, for her guidance, assistance and great “Craic” over the year.
Here’s to the future.
