Junior Cowdy Final - Team Captain, Kevin Coyle

The Junior Cowdy Team played their first leg of the Final at Loughgall yesterday.

As to be expected in a Final both teams were well matched and going through 9 the match was well in the balance.

In the end, the result was 3-1 to Loughgall, with no hole advantage. Home advantage certainly played its part on key holes.

The match results were

John McGrath & Stephen Laverty lost 3&2

Tom Sloan & Raymond Jackson won 7&6

David Osborne & Jonny Lath lost 3&2

Declan McGrady & Jim Madden lost 1 down.

All the pairings did Rockmount proud.

Thanks go to the 2 reserves Malcolm Foreman and Stephen Young who turned spotters for the team ably supported by Robert Burns and Fergus McCartney.

It’s only half-time and we have certainly all to play for at Rockmount on the 24th Sept at 1:30pm.

The large turnout of Club Members to support the team in the weather conditions was greatly appreciated by the Team.

Rossmore Cup - Team Captain, Gary Gorman

Rockmount have reached the final of the Rossmore Cup following victory against Ashfield Golf Club in the semi-final.

Having secured a 3.5 – 0.5 (10 holes) lead at home, the team travelled to picturesque Crossmaglen confident but not complacent.

Team Captain “Gazza” had jetted off to Portugal leaving his VC with the responsibility/pressure of securing the victory.

First out were Neill McKibbin and the “youngster” Frank Wallace. A tight match which was never more than 1 hole up or down until the 18th, finished with a 2&1 defeat.

Next up were Ken Duke and the under pressure VC (Colin Childs). Aided by Dukey’s trusty putter and Colin’s surgeon-like short game the Rockmount pair eased to a 2&1 win and gained the point required.

Third match was Paul and Andy Mearns playing arguably Ashfield’s strongest pair. A stunning Rockmount fightback from 5 down (according to the Ashfield Captain) to finish all square ensured that Andy and Paul were still on speaking terms at the end.

Last out were Russell Jamison and Eddie Davidson. This match was full of high quality golf, especially from Russell (so he told me twice afterwards). A generous Rockmount concession on the 18th resulted in a halved match.

So, much to the delight of Captain Gorman (live by satellite from the pool) Rockmount move on to the final were they play Rossmore Golf Club. Well done to all.

The second pair of Tom Sloan & Raymond Jackson were called in 2up after 14, the third pair of Luke Duggan & Malcolm Foreman were called in 2 up after 13 and the final pair Declan Mc Grady & Jim Madden called in 5up with 6 to play.

The team now move on to play Loughgall in the Final over 2 legs in September.

Another huge thanks from the team members go to the supporters who followed all the matches.

UPDATE (30/7/17)  JUNIOR COWDY TEAM REACH SEMI FINALS

Sunday 30th July saw another superb performance put in by the Junior Cowdy team against Lisburn.

The match was again played in exemplary spirit by both teams.

As expected from last week’s tight matches the Lisburn team showed their strength at home. Through 9 we were level in one just down in 2 and up in 1.

The final pairing proved decisive on the back nine to win 5&4 and all the other matches were called in.

Thanks to all the members who came down to support the team.

Thanks to the Captain, John Hinds, for seeing all the four-balls off the first tee on a busy day of matches for him. Thanks also to Vice Captain Frank McWilliams who supported the team all through the match, the team Vice Captain Fergus McCartney as spotter for the first match, Tommy McCabe as spotter on second match and Council Rep Brendan Houston as spotter on the 3rd match. These three were great motivation for all their pairs.

A great team effort by everyone involved over the 2 legs to get the win.

The team now go on to the Semi-Final against Mourne with dates to be arranged.

David Turner was 4 up through 13 when called in. Lewis Patmore was 1 up through 13 when he was also called in. Terrific result by Team Captain, Jimmy Robinson and his team. Second pair fought back from 2 down after nine holes to win on 17th and the third pair fought bravely to lose on the17th. The fourth pair were all square through 9 holes and got their noses in front to only need a half on 17th to take us through to the next round . Last pair were 4 down with 4 to play and they were going to take the match down the 18th.  Thanks to everyone and Mr. Captain for seeing us off at the match. The team had a tough day at Belvoir on Sunday 25th June with the result ending up 4 1/2 - 1/2 to Belvoir. Three of the matches went down the eighteenth and we were unlucky not come away with a better result. But on the bright side Team Captain Russell believes we can turn the match around at Rockmount. The boys are fired up and we won 5 nil last two games at home. A big thank you to all the supporters who travelled to Belvoir and it would be a big plus to see the same again at home on Sunday 2nd July at 1.15pm.

UPDATE (2/7/17)

The team give it a brave go, but unfortunately they were defeated by Belvoir. Through 12 holes we were looking good. Our first pair were marching back to the clubhouse with 4 and 3 victory. Second pair won 3 and 2 . Our third pair were 1 up at the 13th but lost their match 3 and 2. Our 4th pair were still in the game and the last pair had turned their match around and were going 1 up at the 15th.
I would like to thank all the supporters who once again turned up to cheer their team along. Also, to Robert Patterson for the condition of the course. Every team we met all said the same things about Rockmount's excellent standards with the course and also the fine hospitality - Russell
