The first leg of Cowdy Cup against old rivals, Tandragee. The dreadful weather conditions did not give the Rockmount girls any home advantage. Coming through 9 we had only managed 1 point out of a possible 6. Deirdre got 4 points, Lorraine and Moyra 3 each,Pauline got 2 points and Leonie 1/2 . With true grit and determination the girls came back and finished with 12 1/2 to Tandragee 11 1/2 We arrived at Tandragee to threatening skies, strong wind and scattered showers. After refreshments the girls set off. Jan and Moyra quickly got 4 points each, Diane 3 points and Maire 1 point. With the desired 12 points secured we called in the squad and enjoyed a well earned meal. The next round will be against Lurgan or Banbridge Sue McDonagh Lady Cowdy Team Captain |

Our ladies were in fine form on May Day bank holiday for the home leg – moods had been greatly elevated after our players arrived in near monsoon conditions to hear of a most unusual event - the course had just been declared closed. So after a hasty consultation with the Rockmount diary, both teams agreed to reschedule the match on the Friday of that same week. So on to Friday – this time the team faced near arctic conditions but thankfully no rain. The Lady Cowdy competition has a total of 48 points available – 24 points for both home and away. Each of the 6 singles matches has 4 points - 1 point for the front 9, 1 for the back 9 and 2 points for the match. This detailed scoring unfortunately means that sipping of wine by Team Captains is quite unadvisable as mental agility is definitely required (plus notebook and calculator). Although the games were mostly very tight going through the 9th, our team’s tolerance to cold weather, acquired through many Rockmount winters, paid dividends around the back nine. There was great play as well of course and our Rockmount ladies scored a magnificent 19 ½ out of the 24 points available.
At the away leg we managed to play in proper golf conditions – a beautiful sunny, although breezy day. After Rockmount took 3 out of the 6 points available for the front 9, we had amassed a total of 22 ½ points (and so were getting very close to the required 24 ½ points for an outright win with no count back). In the first match Ciara got a point for the back 9 and when on the 17th hole Maureen secured an additional 2 points for the match, Lurgan gracefully conceded the fixture. It had been an excellent team effort with further back up available from the last 4 matches had this been required.
Having braved all weathers for the first round, this indeed gave further proof that Rockmount ladies are Women for all Seasons.
Last year Rockmount was narrowly defeated by Lurgan in the Lady Cowdy, so it was excellent to have a win this time round. The matches were played in a very friendly and sporting manner with lots of great golf – a pleasure to watch.
The next round will be against Tandragee, who defeated Dungannon in their first round.

In the most treacherous weather conditions, our ladies valiantly fought to get through to the next round of the Cowdy. While the rain stayed away, the wind was a real challenge and certainly negated home advantage in both legs.
11 points was a terrific result away from home, and we only required 13.5 points at Rockmount to win outright or 13 points to level the match and take the win on count back. With 12.5 points at home, we just missed out by ½ point.
Our ladies played hard and made a good account of themselves. This was the first time that Lurgan had ever played Rockmount, and while I know they enjoyed the hospitality, I am confident they felt lucky to have stolen the win…
We look forward to doing battle with them again.
