CHALLENGE CUP TEAM REPORT 2016

Rockmount v Newtownstewart: April

The season opened with our First Round home match on 19 April versus Newtownstewart in cold, damp weather.  The course was in wonderful condition considering the adverse weather conditions over the winter. Noreen O’Hare, Bern McConville, Dianne Andrews, Elana Patterson and Katherina Carswell played well and won 3.5 matches with 6 holes in hand.

The return match on 25 April was again played again in cool, damp conditions on an old established parkland course with many beautiful trees. Jenny Bain, Noreen O’Hare, Bern McConville, Elana Patterson and Katherina Carswell found the course challenging but Rockmount won the 2 matches required, when Elana won a very tight match 1 hole up.

The matches were all played in good golfing spirit and the team thoroughly enjoyed our Newtownstewart encounter.

Rockmount v Co Armagh:  May/June

The second round was very different for 2 main reasons.

Firstly, the weather – glorious sunshine, high temperatures and perfect golfing conditions on 24 May.  Moya Sloan, Noreen O’Hare, Bern McConville, Dianne Andrews and Elana Patterson travelled to Co Armagh; again an old established golf club in wonderful condition, with magnificent views over the city.  Co Armagh won 3 matches and 1 hole, so all to play for at home.

The second different reason occurred in our home match on 5 June, as a result of the opposing team deciding to bringing 3 caddies, 2 days before the match.  Consequently, my team was given the option to take caddies but each declined and with hindsight this may have became a slightly uneven playing field.

Moya Sloan, Noreen O’Hare, Jenny Bain, Dianne Andrews and Elana Patterson fought hard and won 2 matches, but Co Armagh won 3; an overall win by 6 matches to 4 for Co Armagh

As Team Captain, I would like to thank all the team members for their enthusiastic participation in the Challenge Cup and both Newtownstewart and Co Armagh for warm hospitality and good craic after the matches.   Let’s hope that in 2017 we get through to the 3rd round and beyond.  Good luck girls!

The first match of the second round was played at home.  The weather was fair; cool and damp.  Everyone played well, winning 4 matches and 15 holes against a very strong team.  Heather had an excellent 6/5 win.

The return match at Edenmore on 7 June was played following a severe weather warning and continuous torrential rain.  The match started on time and as conditions gradually improved the course recovered well and the match amazingly finished in sunshine.  A tough course and strong opposition, the outcome of the match was uncertain – Rockmount ladies having lost the first 3 matches.  However, Jenny won her match 5/4, quickly followed by Helen, who came in with a 4/3 win, giving Rockmount an overall 6/4 match win.  Well done Team.

Next Opponent: The first leg of the 3rd Round match will be played away v Tandragee on Tuesday 24 June – tee off 3.30 pm.

The first round match of the 2014 season was played at home in dry but cool weather conditions.  The course looked really well and it was very kind of several members to come and support the team. Everyone played really well, winning all matches convincingly with a total of 23 holes. Moya and Jenny finished early with a 6/5 and 7/6 win respectively.  The Cairndhu ladies were a really friendly and sporting team and everyone involved appeared to enjoy their matches (in spite of the rather devastating outcome for the Cairndhu team). It was a joy to see the 2 matches which finished really early (Heather’s and Jenny’s), swap partners and continue to play several holes in foursome format in the true spirit of the game!

It was really disappointing that after everyone having a practice round at Cairndhu (an interesting course with the most spectacular scenery), their team captain was unable to field a team and conceded the mat

Although were 4 matches and 16 holes up after the home leg, we were aware that Lurgan were strong opponents at home – as proved to be.
But with Noeleen winning 5 and 4 and Moya winning 2up on the 18th, Rockmount were the winners.
Our opponents were very gracious in defeat and wished us well in the semi-finals.

The away leg to Fintona saw Rockmount down by 4 matches and 4 holes. However this didn’t deter the Rockmount girls! At the home leg, Rockmount won all 5 matches and 26 holes.
The girls were all wonderful.

All matches were played on lovely days and with great sportsmanship.
After the 1st leg, Rockmount had got 3½ matches away. At home, 2 great wins from Lady Captain Noeleen Houston and Audrey Chambers meant Rockmount were through to the 2nd round.

With Rockmount being 4/1 up in the home match, Ballyclare fought back on their home course. Four matches went to the 17th, 18th and 19th holes but with Jennys early win and Helen winning on the 19th hole, Rockmount secured the two matches required for the overall win.

The first leg was played in beautiful weather conditions and Rockmount had a great day ending up with 5 matches and 26 holes. What a result!
The Helens Bay Lady Captain commented on the pleasure it gave her to hear the laughter between the teams and the moral after the matches.
The team travelled to Helens bay on a very windy day. Jenny joked that the teams play cards inside instead of golf outside but the team made it to the 1st tee wrapped up against the ‘summer’ wind.
All matches were well contested and eventually Rockmount got the vital match on the 16th hole. We had a lovely day at Helen’s Bay and now go on to play Ballyclare in the 3rd round.

At the away match at Larne, although the sun was shining it was bitter cold with a gale of a wind coming from the sea.
All the matches were played in great spirit with much laughter and smiles as they battled not only with each other but against the elements. Thank goodness it wasn’t raining.
We were given a warm welcome by the Larne Lady Captain.
We had a few rookies to the team competitions on both sides but the friendly way the matches were played and the hospitality from Larne was a wonderful introduction to team golf for them
Rockmount won 9 of the 10 matches to go through to the next stage.

The match was played in appalling conditions with gale force winds of 80 miles per hour causing havoc and with broken branches and debris littering the course. Balls blown off greens and trolleys blown over made it very difficult to keep your balance.

This was more than golf, it took courage, determination and stamina. Rockmount Ladies had it all, but unfortunately lost by 1 hole after two very tight matches ending on the 18th and 19th holes.

It was an honour to be Team Captain of such a courageous team. Thank you Bernie, Audrey, Bern, Dianne, Helen and Elana (caddy).

Very tight matches played in great spirit.
The weather and course were fantastic.
Bernies trolley breaking in two on the first hole was a shock to us all, not least Bernie. But she calmed down and won her match 5/4.
Well done all.
